Each year, the Killam Emerging Research Leader Award is presented to up to three individuals who have outstanding contributions to an area of research within 10 years post-awarding of their PhD. With a $3,000 cash prize, a $10,000 research grant and a commemorative certificate at the annual Killam reception, the award is a celebration of the leadership and ambition of researchers that are still early in their clearly promising careers.

Lucija Muehlenbachs' research focus is on resource economics and its effects on both the environment and policy. Recently her work on natural gas, specifically shale gas and methane, has been featured in journals such as Energy Policy and the Journal of Association of Environmental and Resource Economists. Her research has been featured in numerous media outlets over the years, including recent research on inactive Albertan oil wells in The Globe and Mail and CBC as well as a report on methane leaks featured in Forbes.
