In memoriam: Dr. Syed Nural Alam

On August 17, 2018, the University will lower its flag to recognize the recent passing of Dr. Syed Nural Alam, one of the Department of Economics’ associate professors emeriti (Dec. 31, 1931 – July 31, 2018).

Originally from Bangladesh, Dr. Alam completed a master’s degree in social sciences from the International Institute of Social Studies at The Hague, before moving onto Yale University, where he earned his Master’s of Arts and PhD in Economics. After moving to Calgary, Dr. Alam was an associate professor of economics at the University of Calgary for over 30 years, as well as department head for a term, before retiring in 1993. Dr. Alam was not only respected by his colleagues and students but also a beloved father, husband, and grandfather to his family. In his personal life, he was an avid reader, lover of classical music, and outdoorsman, willing to share more than simply his academic knowledge to all those who asked.

The Department of Economics will mourn the passing of Dr. Alam, a kind, devoted, and gifted member of our community.
