Faculty Spotlight: Alex Whalley awarded the 2020 Student's Union Teaching Excellence Award!

The Student's Union Teaching Excellence Awards for 2020 have been released and the Department of Economics is proud to announce that Dr. Alex Whalley has been awarded one. This award marks the third time in the 36 year history of the SU Teaching Excellence Awards, which date back to 1984, where an Economics faculty has received such a significant award. In total, there were 37 winners.

Each year, the Student's Union honours exemplary teaching at the university, and has been doing so since 1975, with awards being formally handed out starting in 1984. The awards are nominated by students to recognize and award the quality of instruction they have received, and bring attention to the university's continued teaching excellence

Alex Whalley worked with his ECON 599 students to incorporate the university's Work Integrated Learning Initiative, encouraging students to implement their research and skills into practical analysis of current topics. His research focus has been using Big Data to estimate economic impacts of innovation and regional development policies, which you can read more about in UToday.
