Congratulations Lavinia Moldovan and Michael Ata for their recent appointments at Mount Royal University!

The Department is pleased to announce the recent appointment of two of its doctoral students to tenure-track assistant professor positions at Mount Royal University.

Lavinia Moldovan (ABD) has been appointed to a teaching faculty position in the Department of Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies.  Lavinia is an outstanding instructor, well known for her effective instruction over the last ten years teaching at St. Mary’s University, University of Lethbridge (Calgary), and Mount Royal University.  During her studies in the Department, Lavinia was a terrific teaching assistant and instructor While here, Lavinia completed the Instructional Skills Workshop and was also awarded a University Teaching Certificate.

Michael Ata has been appointed to a research faculty position in the Department of Economics, Justice, and Policy Studies.  As a Ph.D. student, Michael has developed an exceptional teaching portfolio and record of teaching effectiveness, teaching intermediate microeconomics in the Department, as well as finance classes in the Haskayne School of Business, and principles of microeconomics at Mount Royal University.  He won the 2015 Department of Economics Graduate Teaching Award.

Michael’s doctoral dissertation examines optimal enforcement policy of antitrust rules (when to investigate and convict a firm of anticompetitive conduct). He has significantly advanced the economic understanding of conduct by enforcement  agencies.  Building on the existing Bayesian literature and policy recommendations, his research incorporates the response by firms, the efficiency of information gathering, and the budget of the enforcement agency.  It goes beyond determining optimal enforcement rules and instead considers institutional design of the enforcement process.
