About Me:

I was born in Singapore of Belgian and Chinese parents, my family wending its way to beautiful New Brunswick where I grew up. I worked as a researcher at the Bank of Canada for three years prior to doing my Ph.D. at Queen’s University in Kingston, completing in 1993. I was a faculty member in the School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, before joining the University of Calgary in the summer of 1999. Most of my work concerns either the effects of taxes on economic growth. More recently I have worked on the inter-related topics of risk-taking and social insurance. I hold the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation and do occasional consulting work on petroleum taxation. I am an avid chess player and I enjoy sports. My spouse, Gabrielle, is from Ireland and we have two wonderful sons, Sebastien and Aedan.
