Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Soils

by Elizabeth Anne Wilman

Carbon sequestration in agricultural soils can be promoted by practices such as no-tillage. Farmers’ decisions, related to tillage, are affected by its costs and benefits, and in turn influence changes in soil carbon. There has been research which models the farmer’s no-tillage adoption decision. It is recognized that the longer no-till is continued the greater the amount of carbon sequestered. But, the decision of how long to continue no-till has not received much attention. A model which the farmer chooses tillage frequency is presented. Payment policies, and other ways to encourage long term sequestration, are considered.
