The Program

The Health Economics Program (HEP) at the University of Calgary is dedicated to:

developing and applying health economics methods, to aid and improve decision making in health services in Alberta and Canada; and

facilitating the enhancement of knowledge about the economics of health and health care, so that health services are provided more efficiently and, therefore, to the greater benefit of the community.

The Health Economics Program was established in July 1998, and is based in the Department of Economics and the Department of Community Health Sciences. Currently, the Program comprises eleven members working mainly on research but also on teaching.

Members of the Health Economics Program work closely with colleagues in Economics, Community Health Sciences, clinical fields, nursing, management and kinesiology, as well as with service providers in health regions within Alberta. The program receives most of its funding from the Svare University Chair Endowment, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research and the Institute of Health Economics of Alberta. Faculty have competed successfully for project funds at the national level as well.
